My name is Trisha, and I write a blog called 3 Four and Under.  I’m so excited to be guest blogging today.  This is my first guest blog, so please bear with me.  I’ve been thinking this week about what I would write about.  I wanted to do a tutorial of some sort.  I was watching a movie, with my daughter called Happily Ever After
the other night, and it has the cutest dwarfette with a flower petal skirt.  That’s when it came to me that I would share a tutorial on how to make a Petal Skirt.

This is what you will need to make the petal skirt:
  • 1 yard of Fabric A
  • 1 yard of Fabric B
  • ½ yard of Fabric C
  • ½ inch wide elastic
  • rotary cutter
  • quilters ruler
  • cutting mat
  • scissors
  • Straight Pins

To make the waistband you will need to use this formula:
·        Measure waist and add 1” to the measurement
My daughter’s waist is 20 inches, plus 1 makes it 21”
My back waistband will be 21” long
·        Next, divide that measurement in half
That means my daughter’s waist is 21” divided by 2 =10 1/2”
My front waistband will be 10 ½ “ long
·        My waistband is going to be 3 ½ “ wide

Cut: 3 ½” x 21 x’s 2 from your waistband fabric
Cut: 3 ½” x 10 ½ x’s 2 from your waistband fabric

These are the pieces we will be using for the waistband.

To make the waistband:
1.      Take your 2 front pieces and place them right sides together and sew along the top and bottom using a ¼” seam allowance.

2.      Then take your 2 back pieces and place them right sides together and sew along the top and bottom using a ¼” seam allowance.

3.      You will have 2 tubes, turn them both right side out. Iron them.  Top stitch along the top and bottom

4.      Your front waistband is now finished.  You now need to sew in the channels on the back waistband for the elastic to go through.
5.      Sew a straight line down the middle and then sew down the middle of that center line on both sides making 4 equal channels to put your elastic through.

6.      Cut 3 pieces of elastic about 1-2” longer than your waistband.  Using a safety pin attach it to the end of the elastic and feed it through each channel.

7.      When you have all 3 pieces of elastic in, sew down the side where the elastic is the shortest.  Sew over it a few times to make sure it is secure.

8.      Hold all 3 elastic tails and pull so that your waistband slides down the elastic making your waistband.  It will need to measure the same length as the front waistband.  Sew along the edge a few times to make sure it is secure.  Cut off any excess elastic.

To make the waistband:

1.      Place the front waistband on the table and then the back waistband on top.
2.      Sew both ends several times to make sure it is secure.

To make the Petals:

1.      You will need to print out these 2 templates
2.      Click on template for full size of petals.  I used 6 of each size petals for my 21” waist.  Depending on the size you make you may need 7-8 of each size.
3.      Fold your material in two, right sides together.  Please your template with the top edge on the selvedge edge. Pin the template to the fabric

4.      Cut out around the edge of the template.  Do this for each petal.

5.      When you have all of your petals cut out.  Leave the petals right sides together and sew around the edge of each one with a ¼” seam allowance.

6.      Turn all of the petals right side out.  Use a pencil to make the point of the petals.  Press each petal with an iron.

7.      Lay your bottom (largest) petals on the table, overlapping them.  Lay the medium size petals on top of those facing the opposite direction.  Lay the smallest size petals on the top facing the opposite direction. (In the picture below)

8.      Pin the petals all the way across the top to get ready to sew it altogether.  Sew all the way across the top to secure all of the petals together.

9.  You’re almost done!  Pin your waistband to the skirt part.  Start in the front of your waistband and pin.  If you find that you need to make tucks, go ahead and make some tucks so that they skirt will fit onto the waist band.  Pin all the way around the entire waistband.

10.      Sew around the entire waistband, attaching the waistband with the skirt.

Congratulations!
That’s it!
You’re finished!
It wasn’t very hard was it?

It looks really cute with leggings underneath!
