This is such a quick and easy way to hem jeans!
It is GREAT for kids jeans too....I'll show you at the end but the hem can be undone so when they grow and need the length back..YOU HAVE IT!
What you will need :
Jeans
Pins
Sewing Machine
The How to:
Start by putting the jeans on your "model"
{thank you husband}
Pin the jeans 1/4" shorter than you want them to be
You can see how much I folded these up
Next (with out undoing your fold) bend the original hem down to the bottom of your fold
pin in place all around
It will look like these once you are done pinning
Now sew right along the fold and the original bottom hem
(i used a zig zag stitch but you don't have to)
now repeat the same thing on your other leg
see you can't even tell :)
Now here's the great thing about this type of NO CUTTING hem...
When you need them longer again
(lets say when your child grows)
simply unpick the hem
and you still have the full original pant!
Just wash and iron down smooth!
Great way to save money in alterations or having to buy jeans they grow out of so fast!!

ReplyDeleteThat is pretty much exactly how I hem mine also! Thanks for the tip Heather :)
ReplyDeleteI do mine this exact same way! I love it!
ReplyDeleteYeah!! I was so excited to see this tutorial- can't wait to try it!!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for this tutorial. I've been trying to figure out how to hem jeans- especially without cutting! Featured this post today.
ReplyDeleteThis is so smart! I was putting off hemming some linen pants because they shrunk so much after I washed them the first time. Still too long, but I worried they would shrink again. I will hem them this way, and if they shrink it's no big deal. Thanks so much for the tip!!

ReplyDeleteHey Brittany-
ReplyDeleteThis is the best tip I have come by in a long while. I can't tell you how many jeans I have ruined trying to hem them. This is the best idea thank you, thank you. It is so easy, yet I am not the best sewer and would not have come up with this method.

ReplyDeleteI've been dying to know how to hem jeans, being the shorty that I am. For my son I should never have to have this problem because he's so tall. I always wondered how you sewed them without cutting them. DUH stick the leg hole around the sewing machine.
ReplyDeleteBeing a 5' tall professional seamstress, I hem a lot of jeans. You are a genius. I will be hemming jeans your way from now on. Love it!
ReplyDeleteJust found your blog thanks to this tutorial. I had to hem my daughter's jeans and I so appreciate your instructions! It was super easy... BUT she has a pair of bootleg jeans that I don't think this technique will work for because there is more material at the bottom than at the part where I want them to be... any ideas?
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure you just saved my life....I've always had to hem my dd's pants and the jeans always fray, even if I fold twice and sew. And then she they end up being too short eventually. Thank you! I'm over from #UBP11 looking thru your blog...
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for sharing this! I definitely need to do this with every pair of jeans I own! I featured this on my friday favorites!

I am wondering if you need a special needle on your sewing machine to do this?? Also what kind of thread? I quilt so hemming is something i'm afraid to try.
ReplyDeleteThis has been the best tip ever!!! It is fast and easy and looks so good when done! I'm short and am perpetually hemming pants. Thank you!!!!
