NOW ONTO THE TUTORIAL!
Lately I have been working on remodeling my master bedroom and I decided to start with the bedspread!
My taste is somewhat expensive and with a husband in school I had to figure out a cheap way to get the classy look that I wanted.
I am obsessed with everything Anthropologie so one day I decided to make their Knotted bedding myself.
{photo courtesy of Google images}
I first found the tutorial from the {Kojodesigns} blog! Thanks to them I was able to make my dream bedding a dream come true!
and with this tutorial you can to :
Here's what you need to start!
2 king sized white {or whatever color you prefer} jersey bed sheets. NOT the fitted kind. I got mine from Walmart. SUPER CHEAP!
Needle and thread for hand stitching.
A spool of white thread.
A sewing machine.
A 6" bowl.
A hightlighter.
LOTS and LOTS of pins.
AND a white down comforter.
LET'S GET STARTED!
NOTE: this tutorial is for a QUEEN sized bed.
You will need to start by cutting out 18"x18" squares of jersey.
For a queen I cut out 49 squares.
* I actually cut out an 18"x18" piece of cardboard which was extremely helpful.
I set it on top of the fabric and used my fabric roller cutter thingy...to cut the fabric.
After I had 49 pieces I started on the knots.
Get a small 6" bowl from your kitchen and place it directly in the middle of your cardboard 18x18 piece.
Then with the highlighter trace the outside of the bowl onto the cardboard.
NEXT: Place the jersey fabric square over the cardboard and start your hand sewing.
Make large stitches just on the inside perimeter of your highlighted circle.
When you have completed the circle with your thread grab the middle of the circle with one hand and with the other pull the thread tight.
Now you have the start of your knot.
The next part is hard to explain...push the middle of your gather fabric {the part that your hand is holding} through the hole of your knot...so now it's through the other side of the taut thread.
This will make your knot look almost like a flower.
After you have done that you stitch, stitch, stitch.
Stitch back and forth at the bottom of your knot to ensure that the knot keeps it's shape.
While doing this check the other side of the knot to ensure that the piece you have pushed through is being stitch down at the bottom of your knot.
You may do you knots differently but as long as you stitch it enough that it is secure and it has the look you want then it works!
I kinda just did what worked for me.
After you have hand-sewed 49 knots then your ready to piece and pleat together.
Don't get discouraged while hand stitching your knots!
This takes the most time.
I just did a few every night or every chance I could.
You want to piece together length before width. That way it will line up better.
While piecing your squares together make sure you are pleating.
Do 5 pleats per square.
Pinning 7 squares length {across} and 7 squares width {down} together.
This will make it so everything lines up perfectly as well.
I pleated each square individually then pinned it together.
It took a lot more time but I like the way it looked better than putting the squares together and pleating them at the same time.
Now sew your pinned, pleated squares with your sewing machine.Look at those nice pleats!!
You are getting closer!
Once you have sewn your 7 squares together you piece the long strips together and start pinning and pleating them.
REMEMBER: you have to pleat each square 5 times as well.
Once that step is done you will have a big sheet of knotted, pleated goodness...now you need to find an affordable yet comfortable down comforter.
I looked at TJ Maxx and Ross and found the perfect one at Ross for only $40.
I placed the quilt face down on the comforter and pleated and pinned it around the edges. Most likely your down comforter isn't going to have squares to match up with so...just pleat each square 5 times AGAIN while pinning to the comforter and it will fit perfectly in the end!
Then sewed until there is only one square left unsewn. Pull the comforter through so the squares are right-side out and sew the last square on the outside.
One more step!! You're almost there...
If you have a big enough sewing machine you are going to want to 'sew in the ditch' to finish it off but my down comforter was too big and my sewing machine was too small so I hand stitched each corner of the squares to my down comforter.
It was really easy for me to do because the comforter I got had squares sewn into the comforter.
Guess how many squares...7 down and 7 across!
It was meant to be.
But if your comforter doesn't have squares don't you fret...just simply lay it out on the floor, making sure it is all stretch out and placed where it needs to be.
Then starting from the comforter side bring your needle up right where the 4 corners of the squares meet and stitch back and forth about 4 times.
AND...YOU ARE DONE!!
Try not to look to much at my room...it isn't completely done yet.
This bedding simply speaks to my soul.
Can you say {Shabby chic}?
Can you say {timeless}?
Can you say {perfection}?
Pillow cases and sheets from TJ MAXX.
Turquoise body pillow from Target.
Bed skirt from Walmart.
I am planning on making some really fun pillows for the bed as well.
Look forward to seeing those soon!
I know your excited!
There you have it!!
That wasn't to bad was it!?!
Now you have a perfect bedspread for only $50 dollars instead of $250!
