Hooray! I'm so excited to be doing a guest post for Love Stitched!! It's one of those blogs that I check every day just to see what new and wonderful things have been posted. LOVE IT!
I'm Carrian from {Sweet Basil} a food blog. I love to cook and bake, especially with my little family-husband, almost 5 yr old and 9 month old.
My husband and I met as personal trainers and so we both try to stay healthy even with an obsession with good food. One of the ways that we have found to keep our favorite recipes without all of the extra fat is to use substitutions. Especially lately. Our 9 month old has an incredibly sensitive system so she can only nurse and I have to watch what I eat so it doesn't make her sick. For 9 months I've been without dairy, chocolate (I KNOW!!! It's awful!!!!), soy, nut products, rice and bananas (though she is getting a little more tolerant of rice and bananas). If you ever need some help with going without any of that I can surely help.
Anyway, here are some great and easy substitutes to use in every day dishes to help you stay healthy.
*Ground Beef----> Ground Turkey
*Beef (any cut or ground)---> Bison, or Beefalo (haven't tried it? Click HERE to read more. You'll love it)
*Butter in Baking----> Applesauce. Use a 1:1 ratio (Best for quick breads like muffins, cupcakes, brownies etc)
*Cream Cheese---->Neufchatel Cheese (found next to the cream cheese) You can't taste the difference /or 1 Cup of Cream Cheese can be substituted with 1 cup cottage cheese or plain yogurt that sat in cheesecloth over night
*Eggs---->1/2 Banana or 1/4 Cup applesauce per egg in yeast free quick breads
Tofu for egg dishes like quiche, frittata or egg salad, or egg whites for scrambled eggs, omelets etc
*Sour Cream--->Plain, low-fat Yogurt, Greek Yogurt (depending on the dish)
*Milk---->Coconut Milk (great for cooking and baking), rice milk, almond milk, soy milk
*Sugar---> Honey is slightly better than refined sugar
*Rice---> Brown Rice
*Pasta---> Whole Wheat Pasta
* Sausage---> Turkey Sausage
*Tortillas---> Corn Tortillas
*Bread---> Pitas or Whole Wheat Wraps
*Ice Cream---> Frozen Yogurt, Sorbet or frozen fruit such as bananas that are pureed.
Mayonnaise or Cheese---->Hummus
